Step By Step Instructions On How To Download Open Street Maps To Your GPS!

The Steps are short, sweet and to the point. Pictures are added for easier installation. WINDOWS ONLY. NO MACS(apple)- SORRY  :(

Step #1-
Open your internet browser and type into the url bar at the top of the page(or click on the link or copy and paste it): http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download
Step #2-
Scroll down on the page until you find North America and then find Canada(all Provinces). Now make sure that you click the second Canada All provinces as the first takes a while to download. See image for the right one.

Step #3-
Now CLICK on the "osm_routable_mapsource_Canada_2_feb_2010.exe" file highlighted in blue on the page.

Step #4-
The link will take to a website called mediafire.com   Click to start downloading!

Step #5-
Click RUN to start the download.

Step #6-
Let the program run. When completed save it where you can find it accessable. Mine took about 4 hours to download. Judge it on how fast your computer is. I have high speed.

Step #7-
When done downloading. Go to the spot where you had saved the file and open it.
Step #8-
Click NEXT on the wizard. Agree to all the terms and then install.

Step #9-
Let the file do its thing.

Step #10-
     Click FINISH.

Step #11-
Go to your start menu and type in "OSM World Routable". Click the folder.

Step #12-
When opened there will be a lot of IMG files. What you have to do now is plug in your Garmin GPS Device and open the hardware( Should automaticly open) if not go into "My computer through your desktop and open it that way. Then open the GARMIN folder.

Step #13-
GO back to the OSM World Routable folder and highlight all the IMG files from #63240256 to #63240391. So everything but the 63240000 files and the Uninstall file. Highlight by going into the empty space beside(right of) #63240256 and click and hold and drag left and then down to #63240391. See pic.

Step #14-
Let go from holding down the mouse and right click on any of the highlighted files. Click COPY.

Step #15-
Go back to your GARMIN folder and right click and click paste. It might take about 10 minutes to copy. Once done. X out of everything and safely remove your Garmin Device and start er up and bam you got FREE Routable Maps. Enjoy!! Comment if you have ANY questions. Hope this helped!

  1. Thanks for the helpful guide!
Just want to point out that it did not work properly for me in WIN7 but worked OK in WIN XP.
I have installed it on Garmin ETREX 20 and the map displays fine, but don't seem to be able to use to navigate by "Where To?" > Addresses > In what state or province is the address?.... When I enter ON or ONTARIO it fails to find any result and gets stuck in the screen "Enter the State or Province Name".

    Thanks again!

  2. I was just reading your link to the OSM download which says:

The Garmin device loads a single map file called "gmapsupp.img". This file must be in a directory called "Garmin" on the SD-card (so the full path is "Garmin/gmapsupp.img"). If the "Garmin" directory does not exist on the SD-card, you will have to create it.
There can be only be one "gmapsupp.img" file, so if the map is distributed as several .img files you will need to merge them together - this can be done with the mkgmap command "mkgmap --gmapsupp mapA.img mapB.img mapC.img [...]".

Shouldn't the img files be merged into gmapsupp.img before loading into the Garmin?
